Sentiero Monte Fossa delle Felci

Carbonaia

Charcoal Pit
Descrizione

Description

Climbing along the trail, you encounter an element that narrates a chapter of the island’s economic and artisanal history: the Carbonaia (Charcoal Pit). This site is a testament to an ancient trade, that of the carbonaio (charcoal burner), which was once fundamental to the rural and woodland economy of the Aeolian Islands. The carbonaia was a beaten earth clearing where the process of wood carbonization took place, a long and meticulous job that could last up to thirty days. The wood, harvested from the surrounding forests, was arranged in a conical pile, covered with earth, and then set alight to be transformed into vegetable charcoal. Today, the carbonaia encountered along the trail is a site of industrial and rural archaeology, preserved as a memory of the hard work and ingenuity with which the islanders exploited the mountain’s natural resources (mainly wood from heather, chestnut, and strawberry trees) to produce a fundamental resource for heating and cooking, before electricity and other fuels took over.
