Descrizione

Description

In the last part of the Sentiero delle Felci, before reaching the summit, the forest offers the presence of particularly significant tree species, such as the Ofrio and the Syracusan Pine, which bear witness to the richness and uniqueness of Aeolian biodiversity. The Ofrio, or Neapolitan Alder (Alnus cordata), is an imposing tree that stands out for its majestic size and the elegance of its leaves. It is a key species for the mountain ecosystem of Salina, capable of thriving at high altitudes and significantly contributing to shade and the consolidation of the volcanic soil. Beside the Ofrio is the Syracusan Pine (Pinus nigra subs. calabrica), which is a true green giant. Despite its name, this pine has perfectly adapted to the climate and soil of Salina, becoming an iconic element of the mountain forest landscape. Its specimens rise toward the sky, offering an evocative vision of an alpine forest right in the middle of the Mediterranean. These trees are not just landmarks for the hiker, but represent the extreme vitality of the Nature Reserve, reminding us that the Fossa delle Felci is a precious botanical specimen.
